Professional School Counselors: A Student Approach
These days, school counseling is needed more than ever. The school counseling ratio has ballooned to about 700 students to 1 counselor in United States. Thus, students need additional counseling to get the best education available. Education is a corner stone for most individuals and the best tool to securing best education is through great counseling. School counseling center is designed for educators, students, and parents to get the best counseling services.
It is essential to have an experienced counselor in order to have a well-rounded school experience. Administrators, teachers, and counselors are vital components of a school, but counselors advocate students’ needs. The purpose of students going to school is to increase their education, excel in academics, and learn various things to reach their potential. Therefore, it is necessary to have efficient and knowledgeable counselors who can assist students in achieving their goals. I believe that a it is important to have a professional school counselor who demonstrates good counseling qualities through advocacy, leadership, and collaboration while serving a vital role in maximizing student success. The counselor would provide academic, career, and college advice to meet the needs of their clients.
In my opinion, counselor’s method is extremely important when interacting with students and counselors should do their best to commit to establishing a concrete connection with students. Counselors “break the ice” when meeting with students, thereafter build trusting relationships. Once people feel trusted, comforted, and accepted, the possibilities of the students excelling would increase and the students’ successes will be greatly enhanced. As needed, parents should be involved. Otherwise, counseling should be contracted on a regular basis, at least 3 – 4 times in a month.
Additionally, I feel that contracting a professional school counselor gives students the much needed encouragement and support. It is a given that professional counselors demonstrate positive behavior and provide motivational advice. Although some students may have added initiative to utilize the resources to further their goals, other students may need more assistance; this is where regular contact with the professional counselor is mostly needed. The professional counselor then becomes a catalyst and non-judgmental. Also, the professional counselor remains patience, but willing and able to constructively critique the students to bring out the best in them.
Furthermore, since the decimation of in-school counseling, professional school counselors possess optimism and flexibility that students need. The professional counselor is readily available when the expertise is needed to deal with a problem. The students of the professional counselor feel that they are priority and thus students are open-minded and more cooperative, which enhance overall counseling experience and student success. Excellent school counseling is really needed for students’ growth and achievement.
